Frequently Asked Questions on RV Batteries

RV Batteries for Sale OnlineWe’ve been incredibly proud to manufacture the ODYSSEY® battery portfolio for more than 25 years now. During that time, as you might imagine, we’ve received a lot of questions. Here are the answers to some of the more common questions we get.

How Do Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Batteries React to Cold Weather?

ODYSSEY® batteries can start when the temperature gets down to -40°F (-40°C). When the weather gets cold, you want a battery that has the highest Cold Cranking Amps (CCAs) ranking you can find. The ODYSSEY® AGM battery will fit the bill perfectly.

Is it Possible for an AGM Battery to Freeze? Can You Avoid this Problem?

No matter how good a battery might be, it can freeze if the temperature gets low enough. But that will be much less of a risk with an ODYSSEY® AGM battery. As you already know, it will keep working in 40-below temperatures.

In order to keep a battery from freezing, it’s a good idea to make sure it stays charged all winter long. When you only use a battery once in a while, it will sit idle for a long period of time. As a result, it will lose charge (discharge) gradually. The voltage goes down because the liquid inside the battery, known as the electrolyte, converts to water from acid. It will be at a higher risk of freezing as it becomes more diluted.

I’m Worried My Battery Won’t Be Able to Hold Up Through the Winter. How Will I Be Able to Tell Whether or Not There’s a Problem?

You’ll need to have your battery load tested from time to time during the winter months. You can go to a dealer, a mechanic or your local auto parts store. If you don’t have the equipment at home, take the battery to have it checked out.

I Usually Store My RV During the Winter Months. How Can I Keep Issues from Affecting My Battery?

When you select an ODYSSEY® AGM battery, you won’t have to worry about this. As long as it is fully charged, you can disconnect it and it will remain charged all winter long. If you have another battery, get a device that will provide a proper “maintenance” charge or disconnect the cables. If it’s not connected, any current drain won’t damage it.
