Marine Starting Battery

If you want to truly enjoy your day out on your favorite body of water, you’re going to want a strong marine starting battery. You won’t find a better one than the ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose battery. An ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose battery will keep everything running, and you won’t have to worry about it if you can’t find a charge source, such as a shore power charger. The last thing you want to deal with is a loss of power – especially if you have a lot of onboard electronics such as a fish finder, a stereo, navigation lights and so on.

Dual Purpose Batteries – The Basics

Marine Starting BatteryFor a long time, boat enthusiasts have used deep cycle batteries, which delivered the power they needed to be able to go at a slow cruising speed, commonly referred to as “trolling.” If you fish, you know all about it – trolling is what helps you reel in the big ones, of course. A deep cycle battery provides the steady current needed to make trolling possible – but trolling can take up a significant part of the capacity of the typical battery.

Starting a boat requires cranking amps. A deep cycle battery is needed to power onboard electronics and troll. As the name implies, ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose batteries perform both functions. They can handle the deep cycle demands that would cause a starting battery to fail.

The best type of dual-purpose battery has Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) construction. This type of battery contains a liquid, known as electrolyte, that saturates absorbent layers of fiberglass. These layers are pressed between the battery’s negative and positive plates.

ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose batteries take that AGM engineering one step farther with the addition of proprietary Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology. The most significant advantage of TPPL is that it consists of several thin lead plates that sit inside the battery. The more plates, the more power the battery can deliver.

You’ll find more pure plates in the ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose battery than in a conventional flooded lead acid model. These plates create significantly more surface area – 15 percent more. As a result, you’ll enjoy a great deal more power.

The results are incredible when you combine the thin pure plates with the high-quality electrolyte found in ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose batteries. They deliver Cold Cranking Amp (CCA) ratings that are powerful enough to start the engine, as well as deep cycling power for up to 400 cycles – at 80 percent Depth of Discharge (DOD). This makes it possible for our batteries to handle not only onboard electronics loads (known as “house loads”), but also trolling needs.

Other Major Advantages AGM TPPL vs. Conventional Lead Acid Batteries

ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose batteries deliver two times the power and three times the life of conventional lead acid batteries. They can easily handle vibrations that damage lower-quality batteries and continue to work, even in extreme temperatures. Many ODYSSEY® Marine Dual Purpose batteries will keep working in temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C) and as high as 176°F (80°C).
