EnerSys ODYSSEY® Batteries are V4-Certified to Handle Extreme Driving Conditions

Historically, European Union (EU) truck Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) engineered their fleets so that the battery was installed directly behind the main cabin. However, due to recent efforts to treat gas emissions, the original location near the exhaust stacks is now used for a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) reaction chamber, and the only remaining space for the battery is at the end of the frame behind the trailer hitch, known as the 5th wheel.

As a result of this location change, the battery has become more vulnerable to the detrimental effects of extreme shock and vibration. These conditions include anything from bumpy, unpaved dirt roads and severely cracked roadways to steep hills and mountainous landscapes. The extreme vibration exacerbated by the weight of the truck load during any given time can also reduce battery performance and longevity.

To help EU battery manufacturers meet the high-performance demands that this new battery position requires, the EU has developed an automotive testing standard – EN50342-4 – that includes a vibration profile representing the typical loading patterns the battery will experience.

ODYSSEY® ODP-AGMDINC batteries from EnerSys, for instance, are V4-certified to handle the harshest conditions during vehicle operation. To receive this authorization, the battery underwent several stages of physical testing to help ensure its endurance and performance. This included having an ODYSSEY® battery fastened rigidly to the table of a vibration tester to prevent any movement while simulating a turbulent on-road experience. During this restraint period, the battery was subjected to random test profiles in three orthogonal axes (X/Y/Z), while the battery’s vibration load was recorded. Testing time is at least five hours in each direction with ongoing monitoring by a trained technician from start to finish. Batteries that fail the test must be re-designed and re-tested.

Our V4-certified ODYSSEY® ODP-AGMDINC battery is just one example of the performance testing we conduct to validate the quality of our power solutions and to reinforce our commitment to keeping end-user satisfaction top of mind.
