British Stock Car Racing Ace is Fully Charged for the New Season

BRiSCA Formula 1 star, Lee Fairhurst, is eyeing up becoming a two-time World Champion as he gears up for another season with EnerSys on board as a main ODYSSEY® battery sponsor.

Fairhurst made racing history in 2012 when he became the first stock car racing driver to win a world final from the back row of the grid. After battling his way to winning the title during the legendary race at Skegness Raceway, he now has his sights set on being crowned World Champion once again. The ambitious competitor is also vying for the British championship for a third time, having already won the title in both 2013 and 2015.

Speaking on why he chooses ODYSSEY® batteries to power his vehicle through every race, he said: “In the rough and tough world of our full contact racing, I don’t have to worry about my battery system being reliable with ODYSSEY® batteries on board. Every time I hit the start button, I know it will do its job and bring the engine to life. It’s also very easy to fit ODYSSEY® batteries within our chassis with so many different sizes available.”

Motorsport is a family affair for the Bolton-born driver, whose wife, Jacklyn, is also a highly rated stock car racer. Fairhurst explains: “I met my wife through stock car racing; we actually used to compete against each other.”

“Our young son, William, comes to watch every race. I always give him a fist bump before going out and he was absolutely delighted to join me on the podium at the end of last season when I finished in third place in the British championships.

“Having William in the crowd reminds me of what it was like for me watching my dad when I was growing up. He competed from 1979 up to 2009 and I used to help him with the cars when I was younger. Then, I started driving competitively as soon as I was old enough.”

But competing at a professional level isn’t without its challenges. Fairhurst explained, “To be able to fund any motorsport is expensive, but to run at the top of the field takes considerable time and money. I’m thankful to have the support and backing of my sponsors to help me compete and allow me to do the best I can on the track. Stock car racing is a full contact sport, which means drivers are allowed to use their steel front bumpers and cars can take a lot of knocks. Everything needs to be carefully considered from the overall car design to the type of batteries on board.”

When he’s not competing, the stock car racing champion spends his time building and repairing cars. He also takes part in charity white collar boxing matches, fundraising for breast cancer charities and participating in annual events for the drivers’ benevolent fund, which supports racing drivers who are dealing with injuries.

Explaining why he’s so passionate about stock car racing, Fairhurst said, “I enjoy the challenge of competing against the sport’s best drivers and I always celebrate a win by trying to smoke the tyres on the slow down lap for the crowd. My favorite racetrack is Bradford Odsal Stadium, which is a big shale track with lots of action. Stock car racing is also about the people you meet along the way from the fans and the sponsors to the mechanics and the other competitors, who often become lifelong friends, and one even became my wife!”

The rugged, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) construction of ODYSSEY® batteries protects against high-impact shock and mechanical vibration, helping to provide longer service life for motorsport and high-demand applications on and off road.
