At EnerSys®, everything we do centers around our customers. We strive to develop and offer optimized solutions that enable them to address common challenges and unexpected headwinds to keep their operations productive and resilient. To achieve these goals, we regularly speak with our existing customers and perspective clients to learn what their biggest hurdles are when it comes to their vehicle battery to help ensure we deliver products that can overcome these hurdles and enhance their driving experience.
Let’s explore some of the key pain points customers come to us about concerning their vehicle battery and how ODYSSEY® batteries can help address these challenges. As always, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for care and direct any questions to your battery professional.
PAIN POINT: PRICE
Let’s face it, batteries can be expensive; especially if they are not properly maintained and cared for as replacement costs can also add up quickly. This can not only cause more frustration for customers but can also lead to unnecessary vehicle downtime. Lack of knowledge of the various chemistries available on the market today, including Lithium-ion, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and traditional flooded lead acid, may also lead to purchasing a battery that isn’t the right pair for the application.
This is where education is key. At EnerSys®, in addition to offering cost-effective battery options, we have a team of expert technicians that are available to not only help customers correctly install the battery in their vehicle, but also help maintain its performance and longevity through onsite training and/or online assistance. In time, with proper care, this can lead costumers to a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
ODYSSEY® batteries from EnerSys offer an affordable power solution with an array of benefits that add to its appeal over other products. Among these attributes include ample deep cycling reserve power, with engine cranking pulses up to 3,125 amps for five seconds, and significantly higher cranking power than traditional flooded lead acid batteries (as much as 15 percent greater surface area).
PAIN POINT: BATTERY LIFE
Customers want a battery that is going to last for at least a few years, if not more. In addition to long-lasting performance, they often desire a power solution that’s backed with a dependable warranty in the event the battery unexpectedly fails due to issues outside of the customer’s control such as a manufacturing or material-related defect.
With triple the life of conventional lead acid designs, ODYSSEY® batteries have the power to go the distance. Backed by an industry-leading warranty and an exceptional storage life of up to two years at 77°F (25°C), ODYSSEY® batteries can last up to 10 years if properly maintained and manufacturer guidelines are followed.
PAIN POINT: MAINTENANCE
Having to manually inspect and maintain the health of the battery by cleaning and charging it on a regular basis can become a very tedious and inconvenient task. This is a pain point we hear from our customers regularly and we can’t blame them – who would want to add another chore to an already busy schedule? Not only that; but improper battery maintenance due to lack of knowledge or neglect can also lead to premature battery failure and unneeded (and more importantly, unwanted) replacement costs.
As a result of its proprietary TPPL design, maintenance-free ODYSSEY® batteries require much less physical labour than standard batteries.
PAIN POINT: RECHARGE RATE
It’s inevitable that at some point of operation, your battery will need to be recharged. However, excessive overcharging or undercharging of the battery can significantly reduce its lifespan. That’s why it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for proper charging procedures associated with the battery make and model. As a rule of thumb, keeping the battery fully charged helps to prevent sulfation, which is the accumulation of lead sulfate crystals on the plates that interferes with the battery’s ability to hold a charge. The manufacturer’s specifications will indicate the Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) that corresponds to 100 percent State of Charge (SOC).
ODYSSEY® batteries are capable of full recharge in 4-6 hours so your vehicle is always ready for the next journey.
PAIN POINT: DURABILITY
Depending on where you live, your vehicle might need to travel on dirt roads or rough terrain to get to your desired destination. In turn, the constant shock and vibration caused by uneven paths or infrastructure can impact the performance of the battery.
Furthermore, the weather can also play a role in battery productivity. For instance, if a flooded lead acid battery is exposed to high heat, it can reduce its service life at a rate of 50 percent for every 18°F (10°C) increase from 77°F (25°C). On the other hand, plummeting winter temperatures can also negatively impact battery longevity. In fact, the average vehicle battery loses up to 60 percent of its starting power when temperatures drop below freezing and it takes up to twice as much power to get the engine running in cold weather.
ODYSSEY® batteries are engineered to perform in extreme temperatures as low as
-40°F (-40°C) to as high as 140°F (60°C). Manufactured with a military-inspired design, the rugged AGM construction and non-spillable design of ODYSSEY® batteries also protect against high-impact shock and mechanical vibration, helping to provide a longer service life.
For today’s high-end vehicles, an auxiliary battery, like the ODYSSEY® Extreme ODS-AGM14 battery, can provide an uninterrupted power supply above and beyond the vehicle’s main power source to operate any onboard accessories. This can include anything from the power seats, windows, doors and locks to state-of-the-art navigation systems and stereo units. The auxiliary battery can even provide the necessary back-up power needed should the main battery fail.
