Spring has officially sprung. As the weather begins to warm, it presents a great opportunity to give our vehicle a “health” check-up to assess the condition of its onboard components. This includes everything from the windshield wipers (and fluid), tire pressure and alternator to the cabin air filter, engine parts and wheel bearings. One of the most important things to check-in on is the battery, which can not only deliver the power needed to start the engine, but it can also deliver the energy to operate all the in-cabin accessories. For today’s technologically advanced automobiles and light trucks or even vehicles that feature a state-of-the-art stereo unit, it’s also helpful to give your secondary power source, often referred to as the auxiliary battery, a once-over and address any issues you might discover.
National Car Care Month provides an excellent opportunity to show a little extra attention to your vehicle to help ensure it’s in optimal health this spring season. EnerSys® also provides training and technical support to help customers get the most from their ODYSSEY® batteries. Our team of skilled experts are available to answer installation or maintenance questions as well as proper charging procedures to help deliver a lower total cost of ownership.
Here are just a few tips to help maintain a healthy battery. As always, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for care and direct any questions to your battery professional.
- Inspect the case, terminals, cables and clamps and clean as directed
- Check the battery’s state of charge
- Check the battery for corrosion
- If the battery is a conventional flooded lead acid battery, check the electrolyte and replenish as needed
- If the battery needs replacement, be sure to disconnect all cables from the battery before removing it from the vehicle
- If you’re installing a new battery, make sure to connect the positive cable to the positive terminal and the negative cable to the negative terminal and tighten all bolts, crews or nuts to the appropriate battery torque specification
There’s never really a “perfect” time to check-in on your vehicle battery, but National Car Care Month, which takes place in April each year, serves as a great reminder so you can help prevent unnecessary issues from occurring that impact performance or productivity. If along the way you find it’s time to upgrade to a new battery solution, consider investing in one of our ODYSSEY® batteries, including our latest auxiliary model – the ODYSSEY® Extreme ODS-AGM14 battery. Maintenance-free and representing the first-ever Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) power solution for automotive auxiliary applications, the Extreme ODS-AGM14 battery from EnerSys® can run anything from lighting and navigation to high-end electrical devices without running the vehicle’s motor.
