ODYSSEY® Batteries Help Keep Heavy-Duty Vehicle Cabins Cool in the Summer

Sleeper cabs enable long-haul truck drivers to equip their rigs with onboard living space to avoid the time, money and hassle of finding accommodations on the road. These living spaces often include a host of electronic devices that provide security, entertainment, HVAC, refrigeration and food heating. During the summer, drivers particularly rely on the dependable operation of air conditioning.

While all these amenities add to the driver’s comfort, convenience and safety, these accessories tax the truck’s batteries, which not only turns the engine over, but also enables systems like the air conditioning to run properly. Additionally, the engine operation often increases the environmental temperature that is exposed to the batteries. Long exposure to high temperatures accelerates the battery’s chemical reactions, gassing and positive grid corrosion, especially if the lead plates contain calcium in their alloy. The combination of high temperatures and increased house loads to power the air conditioning can be detrimental to the life of the battery, but the true impact on performance may not become apparent until the weather gets cold.

The reliability of conventional lead acid batteries, whether they’re flooded or even Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), can be compromised when handling the additional demands that the hot weather places on them. Non-spillable, AGM ODYSSEY® batteries, manufactured with Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology, are engineered for handling the increasing number of onboard accessories, as well as the extreme weather conditions brought on by the summer heat. TPPL technology uses pure lead plates, which can be made thinner so more can fit in the battery. More battery plates create more active surface area, which in turn, provides twice as much power as conventional lead acid batteries. ODYSSEY® batteries also tolerate extreme temperatures, from -40°F (-40°C) to 140°F (60°C).
